Hanuman Chalisa — English Meaning

1. I respectfully bow to my spiritual teacher and seek his blessings. With his grace, I cleanse and prepare my mind to understand the greatness of Lord Hanuman.

2. I praise Lord Rama, the noble descendant of Raghu, whose pure glory brings fulfillment to the four aims of human life.

3. Knowing that my understanding is limited, I remember Lord Hanuman, the divine son of Vayu. Please bless me with strength, wisdom and knowledge, and remove my troubles and negative qualities.

4. Victory to Hanuman, the vast ocean of wisdom and virtues. Victory to the mighty lord of the Vanaras, whose glory shines throughout the three worlds.

5. You are the divine messenger of Lord Rama and possess immeasurable strength. You are known as the son of Anjana and Vayu.

6. You are immensely courageous and powerful. You remove harmful thoughts and encourage noble understanding. Your golden appearance is beautiful, adorned with splendid clothing, earrings and curly hair.

7. You carry the mighty thunderbolt and the divine flag. The sacred thread rests upon your shoulder. You are regarded as the son of Lord Shiva and Kesari, and your brilliance and greatness are honored throughout the world.

8. You are learned, virtuous and extremely intelligent. You are always eager to complete Lord Rama’s work.

9. You delight in hearing about Lord Rama’s divine deeds, and Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Sita always reside within your heart.

10. You took a tiny form to appear before Sita. You assumed a powerful form to set Lanka ablaze and a terrifying form to destroy the demons, successfully completing Lord Rama’s mission.

11. You brought the life-restoring Sanjeevani herb and helped revive Lakshmana. Lord Rama was filled with joy and embraced you.

12. Lord Rama praised you greatly and declared that you were as dear to him as his own brother Bharata.

13. Your glory is celebrated by countless beings. Lord Rama, the Lord of prosperity, embraced you after praising your greatness.

14. Great sages, divine beings such as Brahma and Narada, and other celestial personalities all sing about your glory.

15. Even Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions cannot fully describe your greatness. Great poets and scholars also find your glory beyond complete expression.

16. You helped Sugriva meet Lord Rama, through which Sugriva regained his kingdom and position.

17. Vibhishana accepted your wise guidance and eventually became the ruler of Lanka. Your wisdom and devotion helped bring about this transformation.

18. You leapt toward the Sun, which was an immense distance away, believing it to be a sweet fruit.

19. Carrying Lord Rama’s ring as his message, you crossed the vast ocean without hesitation. Difficult tasks become achievable through your grace.

20. You stand as the guardian of Lord Rama’s doorway. No one can enter without your permission. Those who seek refuge in you receive comfort and protection.

21. When you control your immense power, even the three worlds remain calm; when you release it, your strength can make the worlds tremble.

22. Evil spirits and negative forces stay away when the mighty name of Hanuman is remembered.

23. Those who constantly remember courageous Hanuman are believed to gain relief from illness, suffering and pain.

24. Hanuman frees devotees from difficulties when they sincerely remember him through their thoughts, actions and words.

25. Lord Rama is the supreme and righteous king, and Hanuman carries out all tasks entrusted to him.

26. Whoever approaches Hanuman with a sincere wish can receive the fruits of their aspirations according to divine grace.

27. Your glory shines throughout all four ages and is renowned throughout the world.

28. You protect saints and noble people and destroy evil forces. You are especially beloved by Lord Rama.

29. You possess the power to grant the eight spiritual accomplishments and the nine forms of divine prosperity, a blessing said to have been given to you by Mother Sita.

30. You hold the spiritual essence of devotion to Lord Rama and remain eternally dedicated to serving him.

31. Through devotion to you, people draw closer to Lord Rama and become free from the burdens of suffering accumulated through many lives.

32. At the end of life, devotees who remain devoted to Lord Rama are believed to reach his divine abode and continue in the path of devotion.

33. A devotee need not allow the mind to wander toward many other divine forms; sincere devotion to Hanuman brings divine blessings and well-being.

34. Remembering mighty Hanuman is believed to remove difficulties and reduce suffering.

35. O Lord Hanuman, revered master, please show your grace upon us with the compassion of a true spiritual teacher.

36. Whoever sincerely recites the Hanuman Chalisa repeatedly with faith is traditionally believed to become free from bondage and experience spiritual happiness.

37. Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa with devotion is believed to attain spiritual fulfillment. Lord Shiva himself is regarded as the witness to its sacred power.

38. Tulsidas describes himself as a humble servant of Lord Hari and asks Lord Hanuman to remain forever within his heart.

39. O divine son of Vayu, remover of difficulties and embodiment of auspiciousness, please reside within my heart together with Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Mother Sita.
